I'm going to try something new. We'll just see how it goes. I love getting comments from people, having other streams flowing into the river, so to speak. I'd really like to have even more. So I'm going to post some of my favorite writing exercises. If you feel like doing the exercises as well (whether or not you consider yourself a writer), it would make my day if you would post what you wrote in the comments section. Remember, it doesn't have to be great writing. The point of this is simply exploration -- and sharing.
So here goes. From Poemcrazy by Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge, answer the following questions. (My answers are in italics. Just substitute your own.)
If I were a color, what color would I be? burgundy
movement -- lurch
sound -- snatches of a hummed symphony
animal -- hummingbird
song -- I can't remember the title, but it's a piano piece full of sadness, hope, and longing.
number -- one
car -- I wouldn't be a car. I'd be a bicycle with a white basket and a baby seat on the back.
furniture -- one of those bowl shaped wicker chairs with lots of cushions
food -- ice cream with nuts
musical instrument -- pan flute
place -- a backyard garden
element in nature -- waterfall
tree -- willow
What is something I'm afraid of? nothingness
What's the word hiding behind my eyes? longing
Now, using what you have written above, write a few lines about yourself, beginning with
I am ...
I am a hummingbird,
stalking bright flower faces,
persistent, alone ...
I am the liquid notes of a pan flute,
barely rising above
the roar of the waterfall.
I am a willow tree,
bent over the banks
of a chortling stream.
Now you try. I can't wait to read about YOU!

What is something I'm afraid of? fear
What's the word hiding behind my eyes? expectation
Fear billows like the wind
Through the birch trees
Right before a storm
Off in the distance
The ground begins to shake
I turn to look with anxious expectation
As a dark majestic stallion
Tears into the straight
Fear gives way to wonder
At his speed and striking grace
Power, strength and stillness on his face.

I am the depths of the ocean, dark and mysterious but the few who have traveled there have seen the beautiful life that exists there.
That is all I could come up with. It took me a long time just to write two sentences. I think I'll leave the writing up to you Jenn :)
Ok. Let's try this.
If I were a color, what color would I be? Well, at this moment, I would be gray because I just woke up from a nap and my brain is still foggy. Normally, I would be "color wonder orange". You know, clear at first, but if you let me sit, I become a vibrant orange :). I'm probably supposed to answer this concisely, but I'm a stay at home mom, so when I get the opportunity to "talk" to a grown up, I seize it with all I've got. Ok. Focus.
movement --
sound --
animal --
song -- "I'm too sexy for my ..."
Ok, Jenn. I give up for now. I will try to come back to this when I have more than 1/4 of my brain functioning. Too much Tupperware this week I guess.
Becca

What's the word hiding behind my eyes? Contentment
I am the brook flowing under the pecans,
Singing my plik-plok song in the rain.
I am the calico cat curled contentedly
on the red-checked table cloth
while potato soup simmers on the stove.
I am the violin whose voice evokes--
Sometimes ghosts of sadness, death and regret,
Sometimes barefoot summer days,
Sometimes shrieking, howling alley cat fights.
I am eighteen different shades of blue.
Ok. Trying this again.

What is something I'm afraid of: Failure
What's the word hiding behind my eyes? Hope
Up and down,
Quickly and slowly.
The ride of my life,
The emotions of my soul.
Seeking to give,
Fearing the pain.
Holding back,
Guarding my heart.
Like the wind in an open field blows sometimes softly, sometimes fierce, so my heart whispers and rages.
Like my cat runs away, then returns for affections, I too cautiously look for unconditional love.
The music of my soul never stops. It trickles and swells and dances around, but it never, ever stops.
Becca
